If you’ve spent any time around local races, there’s a good chance you’ve seen Ralph Fiskness and an even better chance he’s already said hello, learned your name, and asked how your training is going.
Ralph is one of those rare people who makes an impression simply by showing up as himself. He’s been part of the running world for many years now, and at 76 years old, he’s still out there running regularly and traveling around the country to race. Most of us hope we can maintain a weekly routine as we get older; Ralph’s out here stacking finish lines like it’s nothing.
The person who nominated him met Ralph 15 years ago at their very first 5K. Ralph, of course, was already a seasoned runner. But that didn’t matter, he treated them like they belonged from day one. That’s just who he is. Whether you’re a beginner, a comeback runner, or someone grinding through longer miles thinking questionable thoughts about your life choices, Ralph is the guy who will encourage you to keep going.
Ralph spent his career as a teacher, and you can still see that teacher mindset in everything he does. He helps new runners at races, volunteers regularly, and spent 15+ years on the Fargo Marathon Committee, giving back to a sport and a community he genuinely loves.
He’s also known for bouncing back. After facing some health challenges not too long ago, Ralph didn’t let it slow him down. A year later, he’s back to running and racing like he never missed a beat. If you look at his Facebook page, it’s basically a highlight reel of everywhere he’s been and everything he’s accomplished. Seriously impressive stuff!
But his miles aren’t the thing people appreciate most about him. It’s his attitude. His steady positivity. His ability to make everyone feel welcome. He’s the guy who introduces people at events so no one feels awkward or left on the sidelines. And lately, he’s taken the nominator’s son under his wing, supporting him as he gets into running and helping at events. That kind of kindness sticks with you.
If Ralph were a running shoe, he’d be a Brooks. Consistent, dependable, and always there when you need a little support.
Ralph, if you’re reading this:
Thank you for the way you show up. For the miles, the encouragement, the kindness, and the impact you’ve had on so many people over the years. This community is stronger because of you.
Keep doing what you do. We’re grateful to run alongside you.
We asked Ralph to provide some narrative on the images that were shared with us and of course, he graciously shared with his usual humor and humility!

"Flying Pig in Cincinnati: Greg Schake needs to be given credit. A trucker he drives us to races up to a 1,000 mile radius. Without him, my running would be smaller. My joke… he’s half my age and twice my size"

"Running with Greg in the Grand Tetons"
Ralph taught and was in charge of an orphanage in Jamaica!
“Spring Village 2009 (We lived in an orphanage for boys in Spring Village): Jewell and I wintered for 2 month in Jamaica. I created a runners club and anywhere from 5-25 orphan boys ran the city and country side. They were all barefooted. I wore an alarm message around my neck and if an issue, push a button and the police would respond. Never needed it!"

"Running with Brother Conrad in Waconia MN this year. He 87 finished 1st in his age group 5k and I at 75 1st in my age bracket. A real brotherly celebration"
