Top 3 Things That Put You At Risk for a Running Related Injury
By: Dr. Lizette Sunde
Running can be one of the most accessible and rewarding forms of exercise. Besides the multiple health benefits, I always feel its a way for me to connect to nature, clear my mind and associate with other runners. However, the rhythmic pounding of feet on the pavement can sometimes lead to a variety of injuries. With running creating forces that can be 3-4x your body weight (with each step!) it's no wonder that having a running distance of more than 40 miles per week (1) is associated with a greater risk of running-related injury.
From the novice jogger to the season marathoner, almost every runner faces the risk of injury simply because there are risks in every stage of your running journey. This is why being a new runner or having a running experience under 2 years and restarting running (1) is also associated with a greater risk of running-related injury.
But understanding these common running-related injuries, their symptoms, causes, and how to prevent and recovery from them is essential for maintaining a healthy running routine. The strongest evidence shows "that a history of previous injury and having used orthotics/inserts was associated with an increased risk of running injuries" (1).
Completing an Initial Running Assessment can empower you with the knowledge you need to help you stay injury-free and continue enjoying the many benefits of running. Whether you're looking to enhance your performance, improve your running gait or simply want to enjoy a pain-free run, being informed is the first AND most important step toward a safer and more fulfilling running experience.
